36,010 Pro-Life Petition Signatures Presented to Members of Parliament

Following the public consultation by the Government in 2005 on how to best protect Malta against abortion, to date, the unborn child in Malta is still not adequately protected from the possibility of abortion being introduced into our Islands in the future. Gift of Life has lobbied to give the unborn child the right to life through our Constitution. Once the amendment is made, then a future Government will need at least two-thirds of parliament to agree to introduce abortion and not a simple "one seat majority vote" as things stand today.

The petition, signed by at least 36,010 valid signatures was presented in the Palace courtyard today 23rd November 2007 by members of the Gift of Life foundation to Acting Prime Minister Dr. Tonio Borg and MPs Dr. Michael Asciak, and Dr. Franco Galea on behalf of the Government , as well as to Dr. Anglu Farrugia from the Opposition.

The petition, which will be tabled in Parliament requests “the Government and the Opposition to work together to clearly protect, through our Constitution, the right to life of the unborn child from the moment of conception"

The signed petition presented today includes 40 signatures by Members of Parliament from both sides of the House.
